Message from REDI Council Chair

The missio

Anita Layton
n of the Research Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Council is to provide strategic advice to the VP Research & International and university leadership, providing strategic advice and recommendations based on observations and reports concerning diversity and equity of the research enterprise at the University of Waterloo.

At the University of Waterloo, we are committed to embracing and celebrating the many differences that exist among the faculty members and students of our intellectual and dynamic community. As such, the REDI Council strongly values the broad range of perspectives arising from our diverse society and the campus community. Diversity stimulates learning and encourages imagination. An equitable and inclusive research enterprise is also essential to creating the excellent, innovative and impactful research necessary to seize opportunities and for responding to global challenges.

Embracing Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenous Initiatives (EDII) is not just about publishing a policy, but rather enacting change in behavior and practice throughout campus. To move the needle, the REDI Council advocates for the alignment of EDII with Waterloo’s strategic plan and university culture in a genuine way. From hiring practices to research training to industry partnership, EDII plays a key role. With resources provided by the Office of Research and support from university leadership, we are confident that EDII will become an increasingly standard component in every corner of Waterloo’s research enterprise.
