University of Waterloo postdoctoral fellow and small business entrepreneur, Jason Deglint, was recently recognized with the 2021 Mitacs Global Impact Entrepreneur Award for his work tackling damages and losses in the aquaculture industry, estimated to cost $2 billion.
As outlined in an article published by Mitacs, Deglint created a low-cost solution to detect harmful algae blooms that kill fish. Deglint went on to create Blue Lion Labs with co-founder Katie Thomas that recently received an equity investment to bring their software, combined with investor OTAQ’s hardware to market by 2022.
