Biography:

Moira Glerum is currently a Professor and Associate Chair, Graduate Studies in the Department of Biology. Her research centres on understanding the molecular bases for inherited mitochondrial diseases, with a focus on a key enzyme of the oxidative phosphorylation machinery. In addition to her leadership role in Biology, Moira is a Science Senator and recently served as the Chair of the Policy 14 Development Committee, which successfully developed the current Pregnancy and Parental Leave policy. Prior to joining the University of Waterloo, Moira was a Professor of Cell Biology and Medical Genetics at the University of Alberta, where she and her research team were supported by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. Moira’s training was carried out at the University of Toronto, from which she received both her B.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Biochemistry. This was followed by post-doctoral training at the University of Berne in Switzerland and Columbia University in New York City. With a home-grown love of classical music, Moira is an avid chorister (currently a member of the University Choir) and has sung with a number of Canada’s premiere symphonic choirs, including the Richard Eaton Singers in Edmonton, AB and the Grand Philharmonic Choir in Waterloo.
