Waterloo Conference in Statistics, Actuarial Science, and Finance series

The Waterloo Conference in Statistics, Actuarial Science and Finance is a series of annual conferences hosted by the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada. The aim of this conference series is to bring in top Canadian and international scholars, as well as relevant industry leaders, in the broad fields of statistical, actuarial and financial studies, to present and discuss the most cutting-edge advances in the respective fields. The specific theme of this series varies annually, reflecting the strengths and interests of the different research groups within the department. The year 2019 is the first edition of the conference series.

2019

Topic: Quantitative Risk Management and Financial Technology

The first Waterloo Conference in Statistics, Actuarial Science, and Finance featured the theme “Quantitative Risk Management and Financial Technology (FinTech)”. Risk management and FinTech have been rapidly developing over the past few years. New challenges and practical issues arise on a daily basis, and they become increasingly important for scholars, investors, entrepreneurs, policy makers, and the society at large. The conference serves as an academic platform that provides experts from both academia and industry an opportunity to present their research advances on these two active research fields and their interplay. Topics include mathematical, computational, and learning methods as well as conceptual and technological innovations developed for finance, insurance, risk management, or policy making.

2022

Topic: Biostatistics: Foundations and the Era of Data Science

The second annual Waterloo Conference in Statistics, Actuarial Science, and Finance focused on the theme: Biostatistics: Foundations and the Era of Data Science. This conference featured talks by other leading statisticians, as well as those working in areas of application in which challenging methodological issues of current biostatistical research interest arise. Other areas of focus included the use of data from diverse sources, electronic health records, and causal inference and prediction. Many of these challenges are being addressed now using large administrative data sources which bring both opportunities and challenges, and time was devoted to discussing these issues.

Topic: Young Talents in Actuarial Science and Quantitative Finance

The third annual Waterloo Conference in Statistics, Actuarial Science, and Finance hosted the Young Talents in Actuarial Science and Quantitative Finance conference from Thursday, April 27 to Friday, April 28, 2023. This conference brought together active junior research scholars in the Actuarial Science and Quantitative Finance communities to the University of Waterloo to exchange their cutting-edge research advances. Talks covered a diversified range of research topics addressing current challenges in insurance, risk management, and mathematical finance.

Topic: Life History Analysis and Survey Sampling Methodology – A Conference Celebrating the 80th Birthdays of Jerry Lawless and Mary Thompson

The fourth annual Waterloo Conference in Statistics, Actuarial Science, and Finance was delighted to host a conference to celebrate the remarkable contributions of Jerry Lawless and Mary Thompson to the fields of life history analysis and survey sampling methodology. An exciting program of speakers took place on what was a stimulating and enjoyable two days of talks by leading researchers including collaborators, friends and former students of Mary and Jerry.
