The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with a festival commemorating their Goddess of Offspring, Eastre, who was celebrated through her earthly symbol of the rabbit. from the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of birth and was often wrapped in gold leaf or coloured with flower petals and exchanged. In more modern times we have taken these traditional elements and produced the Easter bunny, bringing eggs and hiding them for the kids to find on Easter morning.
