Clinical practice guidelines

Clinical practice guidelines provide recommendations for patient care that are developed through a formal process. They combine the best available current scientific evidence and research with expert clinical opinion to recommend appropriate steps in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients with various eye and vision conditions.

  • American Academy of Ophthalmology The Clinical Library of the AAO provides full text access to Preferred Practice Patterns (practice guidelines), Ophthalmic Technology Assessments (OTAs), and Complementary Therapy Assessments.
  • American Optometric Association: The Clinical Care web site of the AOA offers the full text of Clinical Practice Guidelines and outlines the various ANSI and ASTM Ophthalmic standards. The standards are not available in full text, however, the WLRC owns many of the ANSI standards and the Davis Centre Library owns all ASTM standards.
  • CMA INFOBASE: Guidelines are produced or endorsed in Canada by a national, provincial/territorial or regional medical or health organization, professional society, government agency or expert panel.
  • National Guideline Clearinghouse: A public resource for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
