The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo recently celebrated the achievements of its Architectural Engineering capstone teams during the Spring MTE Capstone Pitch Competition, sponsored by MTE Consultants.
The annual event showcases innovative design projects developed by fourth-year students, providing an opportunity to present their work to industry professionals and faculty judges. This year’s competition featured outstanding creativity and technical excellence across all participating teams.
Special recognition goes to AE400 instructors Andrea Atkins and Shiyu Wei for guiding students through the design process. The judging panel included the following representatives from MTE: Andy Xiao, Liam Davison, Jonathan Hellinga, and Mario Duscio, alongside faculty judge Costa Kapsis.
Competition Results:
- First Place ($3,000): Team 9 – MEGHQ Cultural Centre (Desi9n Studios 9)
- Second Place ($1,100): Team 2 – Sudbury Event Centre (Form2)
- Third Place ($400): Team 10 – 32 Britain St – Toronto Transitional Community (Pivot Design)
- Finalists ($100 each):
- Team 19 – The Bawcutt Public Library (KARL Retrofit and Design)
- Team 20 – Rebuilding John C. Yesno Education Centre (Aurora Consulting)
- Team 1 – The Six Nations of the Grand River Rehabilitation and Wellness Centre (SGSC)
Event coordination was supported by Bret Polfuss and Adrienne Bruno, CHRP, with additional contributions from Lisa Schneider, Shirley Springall, Mandeep Chahil, and Kenzie Bidwell Windwick.
The competition highlighted the exceptional design and presentation skills of Architectural Engineering students, who transformed their capstone projects into ambitious, passion-driven initiatives. Capstone remains a cornerstone of experiential learning at Waterloo, offering students the opportunity to demonstrate their highest level of creativity and technical expertise.
