Geospheric Sweatbath by Christie Pearson (BArch, 1995) is a featured installation at Public Sweat, a fusion of art and sauna culture and the latest project from the team at Art Spin.
The project connects bathing, utopian communities, and the DIY spirit. Pearson, an artist and architect, is the author of Architecture of Bathing: Body, Landscape, Art (MIT Press 2020) and her extensive world travels in pursuit of diverse bathing practices has led to her design that pairs architectural geometry with rich natural materials.
This project will include a collaboration with artist Rob Cruickshank whose kinetic intervention within Geoshperic Sweatbath will produce a vibratory sensation for visitors reclined with this space.
This cultural experience is inspired by sauna and global sweat bathing traditions, and their shared values of community, connection, and care. The artist-designed sweat bathing spaces simultaneously become public artworks and inclusive public spaces, and are accompanied by contemporary art installations and experiences amongst a creative sauna village and indoor lounge.
Public Sweat is on view March 15 - April 23 at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, viewings must be booked in advance.
