DIALOG’s design residency in honor of Tom Sutherland invited 9 students from 6 Universities across North America to take part in a 4 day design challenge set in the heart of Calgary, along the Bow River. I applied to represent the University of Waterloo with an interest in contributing to the dialogue through my research interest in how the built environment can foster socio-cultural experiences and relationships with Water.

The Longevity of Masonry

This year’s masonry design competition challenges students to develop an innovative conceptual masonry design which highlights the sustainable nature of masonry wall systems. Successful applicants will present visualizations of masonry systems and their architectural potential.

*This competition is open to any student(s) currently enrolled in their undergraduate B.A.S. or graduate M.Arch at the School of Architecture, University of Waterloo.

Geospheric SweatbathbyChristie Pearson (BArch, 1995) is a featured installation at Public Sweat, a fusion of art and sauna culture and the latest project from the team at Art Spin.

Masterworks is an annual showcase of exemplary graduate student work at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. This year, the Masterworks exhibition will be curated by UWSA alum Kurt Kraler around themes explored in his graduate thesis, “The Generic Spectacle” (2016), and his recently published book, “The Signs That Define Toronto” (2022).

Gary McCluskie (BArch '86), a principal architect with Diamond Schmitt Architects, and his team helped complete a $550-million US renovation that solved a notorious problem in the cultural heart of the United States. The acoustics of Geffen Hall were so terrible that some started to call it a curse after two expensive renovations failed to fix the issue.
