Perry Chou

Chemical Engineering, Professor

Biography

C. Perry Chou received his BSc and MSc from National Taiwan University (Taipei, Taiwan) and PhD from Rice University (Houston, USA), all in Chemical Engineering. He is a full professor in the Chemical Engineering Department with a cross appointment in Biology at University of Waterloo. He is primarily involved in developing integrated biochemical, genetic, and metabolic engineering strategies to enhance biomanufacturing with various microorganisms as cell factories. His multidisciplinary expertise in fundamental biological sciences and applied biochemical engineering critically mediates the development of innovative strategies in biomanufacturing and seamlessly integrates various techniques for bioprocess development, including upstream genetic manipulation for microbial strain construction, midstream fermentation technology for microbial cell cultivation, and downstream processing for bioproduct harvest and purification. He is an author of 90+ papers in various peer-review bioscience and bioengineering journals. He has received several awards, in particular Canada Research Chair (Canada) and 1000-talent Award (China). He has been involved in various editorial services, including an editor for Biotechnology Advances, a guest editor for Bioresource Technology, as well as an editorial board member for several peer-review journals such as Scientific Reports.
