BIOL 499 Senior Honours Project

Overview

Biology 499 is a two-term experimental research course (BIOL499A & BIOL499B) with a total credit value of 1.0. Students in BIOL499 undertake an independent research project under the supervision of a Department of Biology faculty member. Students will gain experience in reviewing relevant scientific literature, developing hypotheses, planning experiments, writing a research proposal, conducting research using a variety of experimental techniques, managing and analyzing data, and presenting findings through both oral and written presentations. In many ways BIOL499 is modelled as a ‘mini masters project’ and is excellent preparation for graduate school or other professional opportunities with a research emphasis. While other lecture or lab courses involve ~six hours of participation per week, the time commitment for Biology 499 is less predictable. If you are considering taking BIOL499 based on the minimum number of hours required, this is likely not the course for you. Rather, BIOL499 is for students who want to experience ‘real life’ science and the irregular time commitments and thrills involved. The program is open to students who are entering their fourth year of the following programs:

  • Honours Biology
  • Honours Biochemistry
  • Honours Biomedical Sciences
  • Honours Environmental Science (Ecology)
  • Honours Life Physics (Biophysics)
  • Honours Science

Only students attaining > 73% cumulative major average are normally accepted, although students with > 78% major average in their two most recent terms (normally 3A & 3B) may also be accepted. BIOL499 may not be taken by students before they reach the fourth year of their program. Normally, the project will be done on campus and it must not be part of a Co-op work term or a USRA funded term.

If you have any questions about the BIOL499 program please contact the BIOL499 Course Coordinator Dr. Liam McGuire.

Applications for Spring or Fall 2024 entry are due Mar 22, 2024. Applications for Winter 2025 entry will be due in late November 2024.
