What is the Centre for Career Development (CCD)?

The Centre for Career Development (CCD) supports all students, alumni and employees. Career advisors can help with career planning, career management strategies, graduate and professional school preparation, work search methods and setting meaningful career goals.

What is important to us?

Our main priority is to support students in navigating their career journeys. The CCD is transforming the values that guide our work to include equity, person-centred work and supporting students to cultivate a sense of purpose. These are things that we are working towards. It is important to us to listen to and incorporate the voices of students in our work. We are working on this by involving students in this process, through student feedback and collaborative work.

What could this mean for you?

1. Equity

We strive to ensure that every student can bring their full selves to our spaces and that their concerns will be addressed. When students express their barriers and challenges to us, we will seek to eliminate barriers and advocate for change.

2. Person-centered service

We strive to empower students by creating a safe space for them to grow and design their own career journey.

3. Opportunities to identify what is important to you

We’re continually seeking to support the dreams and goals of students by actively listening and supporting them to notice what they’re good at, what they care about and what kinds of problems they want to solve.

Who are the people that are here to support you?

Our team is made up of individuals who have had a variety of experiences and career journeys. Each of our advisors is dedicated to empowering you in your own. We can support you at all stages of your journey, whether you are applying for a job or figuring out what path you might want to pursue. We are here to listen and help you make decisions that feel right for you.

Why think about

So, you may be thinking...why are we talking about Here at the CCD we encourage you to start exploring your career journey early on in your time at UW so that you can make the most of your experience.

By thinking about your career journey early, it allows you to notice and take on new and unexpected opportunities to determine whether your potential career goals resonate or not. We can help you plan for various work-integrated learning experiences (which can happen both through co-op and regular stream, or the EDGE program) that you’d like to engage in to help you explore wherever your curiosity takes you. Reflecting on these and other experiences can help you to determine the things that you enjoy doing and the problems you want to solve, developing your sense of purpose and plans as you go.

Nowadays, we know that many career trajectories are non-linear, meaning they’re not as predictable as some might think. Sometimes it may seem that once you decide on a career, you are set on a pre-defined path without much opportunity to adjust or shift. This can cause a lot of pressure to know what you want to do early on in your journey. However, you have a lot more choice than you think in deciding how your career will unfold and evolve. You are the only person who can chart your own course.

Currently, it is more common for people to work in multiple industries over their lifetime, ideally driven by their values and an ever-clarifying sense of purpose rather than a target job title. At the CCD, we are here to empower and support you to decide what your career journey looks like for you.
