Events

The Annual Conference of the Austrian Studies Association is being held at the University of Waterloo. Co-sponsored by the Association, the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo, the Waterloo Centre for German Studies, and the Austrian Cultural Forum, the conference brings together students and scholars from across North America and Europe.

The 2013 Jakob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm Lecture will be given by Harvard film scholar Eric Rentschler. Professor Rentschler, who will also be receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Waterloo for his leading scholarship in film studies, will be speaking on the film The Lives of Others / Das Leben der Anderen, winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007.

Beginning Monday, January 13^th, Dr. Alice Kuzniar of the Germanic & Slavic department will begin a free German-movie screening at East Campus Hall here at the university.

Diefenbaker Lecture Series: Literary Studies in the 21st Century. Poster.

By discussing the issues and problems that are currently central to their research in German Studies, these leading scholars will explore how literary studies can fulfill the expectations of an academic discipline and connect with wider society.

Revealing a total of 190 rare photographs, newspaper clippings and political cartoons from different European archives, the exhibition "Dictatorship and Democracy in the Age of Extremes" tells Europe's dramatic story of the 20th century – a past between freedom and tyranny, democracy and dictatorship.
