Linda NazarUniversity Professor Linda Nazar, from the Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the Chemical Institute of Canada's (CIC) highest honour - the 2019 CIC Medal for her outstanding contribution to the science of chemistry in Canada. She is best known for her advancements in battery systems and clean energy storage.

Ontario is recognizing five leading researchers for their contributions to the fields of chemistry, physiology or medicine, physics and economic science and Waterloo Chemistry alumnus Aron Broom (BSc. '07, MSc. '10, Ph.D. '16) was one of the recipients.

Ryan Moreira and Jacob Soley, two doctoral students with Professor Scott Taylor, were awarded the 2018 Dr. J. Leopold Koppel Graduate Scholarship for scholastic excellence in biochemistry and/or molecular biology.

The scholarship, established by John and Suzanne Koppel, honours the memory of John’s late father, Johannes Leopold Koppel, a former professor of biochemistry in the Faculty of Science at Waterloo. It’s awarded annually by the Faculty of Science to a graduate student in the Department of Biology or the Department of Chemistry.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is making it possible to discover new drugs faster, cheaper and more efficiently.

Waterloo chemists have introduced AI to interpret the results acquired by the differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) technique to predict drug properties. This could reduce in principle the time between concept and coming to market of new drugs by years and decrease production costs by $100s of million.

Each year, the University of Waterloo awards HeForShe IMPACT scholarships to outstanding first-year students studying in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The $12,000 scholarships are part of the University of Waterloo’s commitment to encourage more young minds to pursue careers in STEM, an area where those who identify as women or non-binary groups are currently underrepresented.

Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment celebrates 15 years in orbit.Launched by NASA on board the Canadian satellite SCISAT in 2003, the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) was intended for a two-year mission. Fifteen years later, ACE is still providing excellent spectra which provide vital chemical and physical data about our atmosphere, particularly the ozone layer.
