Epic Threads Prizes for Creative Engagement with Ancient History and Literature

For the second annual issue of Epic Threads, the journal’s editors Madelynne Parish and Mary Harper vowed several prizes (worth $1,000 in total), thanks to the generosity of the Classical Studies Department and the UW Shalom Trust. They thus attracted international attention to our student-run journal for creative writing – or should we better say ‘creative engagement’, as two of the winning contributions combine textual with visual art?

The winners are: of the best Homeric Piece are:

1st: Jingnan Wang (UW), ‘Spring in the Wind-Bag’, and
2nd: Nikkita Snelleksz (University of Western Australia), ‘Curse of the Pigs’

The best creative pieces by Waterloo students are

1st: Jerome Sagot (UW), ‘Hymn to Freyr’,
2nd: Eleanor McCrimon (UW), ‘Portrait of a Ptolemaic Queen’ (with painting),
3rd: Kate Coffell (UW), ‘Thirty-Eight’

And the prizes for best creative prizes internationally go to

1st: Madeline Howard (Baylor University), ‘Week in my Life’, and
2nd: Angus Jacobson (University of Tasmania), ‘The Saviour’ (with painting)

Congratulations for your remarkable talent and dedication!

These and other pieces will be published in Epic Threads 2 throughout this summer.
