Anna Ager Memorial Scholarship in Classical Studies
A scholarship, valued at $2,000, is awarded annually to a full-time honours undergraduate student enrolled in Year Four in the Department of Classical Studies in the Faculty of Arts. Selection is made on the basis of academic excellence (minimum 80% average in Classical Studies). This fund is made possible by a donation from Dr. Sheila Ager and Mr. Bill Binney in loving memory of Anna Ager.
Bessie Elnora Cleary Award
This award was established to honour an outstanding student in honours or major plan in Medieval Studies. With a value of $600, this award is normally given each fall to a full-time student with at least 6 term courses.
Cathy Jane Harrison Award
This award has been established by Classical Studies in honour of Cathy Jane Harrison, BA Hons 1999, winner of the Governor General’s Silver Medal. These two $350 awards are given out to the graduating students who have achieved the highest average in Classical Studies and Medieval Studies.
Classical Studies Companion Prize
A prize of $100 presented annually to the student or students who have done most for other Classical or Medieval Studies students as well as for themselves to enhance their formal learning experience.
Robert L. Porter Essay Prize
The Department offers an annual prize of $100 for the best essay submitted in any course during the academic year. The top essays will also be entered in the national competition sponsored by the Classical Association of Canada.
Classical Studies Prize in Greek History
A prize of $100 is awarded annually to the Classical Studies major obtaining the highest mark in Classical Studies 251.
Classical Studies Prize in Roman History
A prize of $100 is awarded annually to the Classical Studies major obtaining the highest mark in Classical Studies 252.
Classical Studies Prize in Ancient Material Culture
A prize of $100 to be awarded annually to the Classical Studies major who attains the highest mark in Classical Studies 241 or Classical Studies 242 or Classical Studies 384.
Classical Studies Award for New Majors
A scholarship of $600 is awarded annually to a new major.
D.C. Mackenzie Junior Prize in Latin
The Department offers an annual prize of $100 to the student who displays the highest excellence in Latin 102, 201 or 202. To be eligible for this prize, a student must enrol in a further Latin course at the University.
Elwin N. Neuru MD Senior Prize in Latin
A prize of $250 to be awarded annually to the Honours Classical or Medieval Studies student obtaining the highest grade in Latin at the 300 or 400 level.
Jacqui Spoth First Year Prize
The Department offers and annual prize of $100 to the student with the highest grade in a Classical Studies 100 or Medieval Studies/Classical Studies 105.
Mac Lewis Memorial Award in Classics
An award, valued at $2,000, will be awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in Year One, Two, Three or Four of any program in the Departments of Classical Studies or Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts. Selection is based on academic excellence (75% minimum cumulative average) and demonstrated interest in Greek and Roman archaeology or material culture. This fund was established by C. McKenzie & Mary Lewis and Tracey & Georgia Levison, along with friends, students and colleagues in memory of Mac Lewis, a hands-on Roman archeologist who taught at the University of Waterloo in the Department of Classical Studies from 2018 until his untimely passing in March 2020.
NA Engineering Associates Inc. Research Travel Award in Hellenistic Studies
An award, valued at up to $1,500, is provided annually to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student who is enrolled in a program in the Department of Classical Studies. Candidates must write a 500-word letter to prove a need to travel to Greece in order to enhance their research in the study of Greece and Classical Greek heritage. Candidates must also be Canadian citizens/permanent residents, residents of Ontario and be able to demonstrate financial need. Interested students are asked to complete the Undergraduate International Experience Award Application or Graduate Student Award Application available from the Student Awards & Financial Aid and Graduate Studies Office websites. Applications are due February 1. This fund is made possible by a donation from NA Engineering Associates Inc. in support of the Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies.
Phyllis Young Forsyth Senior Scholarship
This award was established to honour and outstanding student in honours or major plan in Classical Studies. With a value of $600, this award is given each fall to a full-time student with at least 6 term courses in CLAS, GRK, or LAT.
Robert L. Fowler Senior Prize in Greek
A prize of $100 is awarded annually to the Honours Classical or Medieval Studies student obtaining the highest grade in Greek at the 300 or 400 level.
S.B.P. Haag Junior Prize in Greek
The Department offers an annual prize of $100 to the student who displays the highest excellence in Greek 101, Greek 102, Greek 201 or Greek 202 . To be eligible for this prize the student must enrol in a further Greek course at the university.
Medieval Studies Award for New Majors
A prize of $500 is awarded annually to a new major in Medieval Studies.
