COVID-19 update: in-person course activity suspended

We are suspending all activity for on-campus courses for one week, from March 14 to March 23.  At the end of this suspension, all in-person course activity is cancelled until the end of term, including in-person final exams. Instructors are working on alternate ways to deliver remaining course work and exams/assessments. 

Fully online courses will continue, but in-person exams for these courses are cancelled and may be replaced with alternative assessments. 

Campus operations will continue.

We are suspending all events that are not vital to the academic mission of the University.

Classes, labs, courses and final exams are vital to the academic mission of the University and will continue. We will monitor this situation and will send further updates in the coming hours and days.

We are suspending all travel outside Canada that is not vital to our academic mission.

The global COVID-19 situation continues to evolve. We are giving this direction because we want to protect the health, safety and wellness of our community. We also want to help reduce the spread of disease.

Coronavirus update: advice on event planning

Update for employees

University leaders have been in contact with Public Health authorities on this topic, and they have not recommended that people make changes to gatherings – large or small. At this time, you do not need to cancel or change your plans for large gatherings or any other meeting or event.

While the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve here in North America and globally, the risk for Canada and Waterloo Region remains low.

Coronavirus update: case confirmed in Waterloo Region

Update for employees

Public Health has confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in Waterloo Region is a female in her 50’s from Kitchener. Grand River Hospital and Region of Waterloo Public Health are taking all necessary precautions to avoid the spread of the virus. 

The risk to our region and Canada still remains low.

Coronavirus update – travelers to Iran must stay home upon return

Update for employees

The provost has suspended University-sanctioned travel to Iran until further notice.

Travellers returning from Iran must stay home and avoid contact with others for 14 days after returning to Canada. Travellers returning from Hubei province in China must also stay home and avoid contact with others for 14 days.

Campus support for Coronavirus outbreak

With the news of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan affecting the people of China and the world, we wanted to reach out and let you know that the University of Waterloo, the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association and the Graduate Student Association are thinking of our students, especially many of our international students whose family and friends may be impacted by the illness and the efforts to contain its spread.

Travel advisory - travel to China is suspended

On January 29, the Government of Canada raised the risk level for travel to China to “avoid non-essential travel.” In light of this change, we are suspending all travel to China on University business until further notice.

We will remain in touch with travellers in China to offer our assistance, as required, on a case-by-case basis. Students and other travellers currently in China are not required to leave the country.

Coronavirus update

In January 2020, a new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was identified as the cause of an outbreak of pneumonia originating in Wuhan, China. The situation is rapidly evolving and Campus Wellness, Region of Waterloo Public Health and Emergency Services, Public Health Ontario, along with the Ministry of Health, is closely monitoring the outbreak.

The risk to Ontarians is still considered low.
