Role of Framework Geology in Coastal Barrier Response to Extreme Storms
Prof. Chris Houser

Using examples from Florida, Texas and Prince Edward Island, this talk will examine how framework geology influences coastal barrier response to hurricanes and tropical storms. Specific focus will be placed on the exchange of sediment amongst the nearshore, beach and dune, and the processes responsible for post-storm recovery. Depending on the extent of dune scarping and washover, it can take upwards of a decade for the beach and dune to recover in height and alongshore extent, which suggests that an increase in storm activity and/or loss of sea ice may limit recovery and lead to new barrier morphology and management strategies.
