Dr. Stephen Evans recognized for excellence in geohazards research in North America
Growing up in Swansea, Wales, Dr. Stephen Evans was always interested in geology and geography and was fascinated by maps. When he took home the Royal Geographical Society Prize for the highest mark in Advanced Level Geography in Wales in 1966, it was the first step in a lifetime of involvement in engineering geosciences.
More than half a century later, Dr. Evans has become a leader in geohazards research, focusing on landslides in Canada. His contributions to research and public education were recently recognized by the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists (USA) and the Canadian Geotechnical Society, who honoured him with this year's Schuster Medal Award.
