Our MA and PhD programs begin with a remote mathematics refresher course in late August, and in-person classes in September. Applications for admission in a given September are due on February 1st of that year. All applications are processed through the university’s centralized application portal.
When we consider you as an applicant, our first priority is to ensure that as a student you will succeed in our program. We look for successful students by selecting among those who meet certain requirements.

For admission to a graduate program, you can find the minimum requirements and the required application materials by following these links:
What to include in your application
Beyond the official minimum admission requirements, here are some things to keep in mind about our application process.
-
We are not accepting any PhD applications from international students at the moment.
-
Completion of the GRE is not required but is recommended for students who have graduated from institutions outside of Canada or the US and are applying to our PhD program.
-
Apply to only ONE MA program. There is no advantage to applying to multiple programs, and you will need to pay the application fee for all your applications. We consider all MA applications to our programs simultaneously using the same criteria. If you decide later that you want to switch from one MA option to another, we can easily do this for you after you have been accepted but before matriculation.
-
We only admit one cohort of students a year for a start date in September. If you apply by February 1, we will consider your application then for September of that year. Individual faculty members do not make admissions decisions. You are admitted by a committee that represents the whole department, regardless of your specific research interest, and you do not need to find a supervisor in advance.

If you are interested in applying for external funding, keep in mind that other funding sources may have deadlines earlier than our February 1 deadline. In particular, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship has an intent-to-apply deadline that is earlier in the year, and the deadline for MRP students to apply to the SSHRC Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Master's (CGRS M) is even earlier.
