Master of Economics, Cooperative work option

Our MA program provides you with relevant analytical and problem-solving skills through coursework and research. The co-op option provides you with the opportunity gain two terms of paid work experience and a fresh perspective on your academic work during your twenty-month MA program.

In the MA co-op program you will complete two terms of coursework followed by two 4-month work terms or one 8-month work term. After the work-term(s), you return for one more academic term to complete a Master's Research Paper (MRP) or two remaining ECON electives.

Our MA students typically find co-op positions in federal, provincial or municipal government, as well as private sector jobs that involve economic analysis.  Most jobs involve substantial analysis of economic data.

Hiring process

Our co-op program is supported through Co-operative and Experiential Education (CEE). You can find jobs through WaterlooWorks, the employment hub organized by CEE, or you can find work independently.

Switching into the MA Co-op

If you are in the regular MA program and would like to switch into the co-op program, please let the Graduate Coordinator know as soon as possible and submit a Graduate Program/Plan Change form to the Graduate Coordinator before the end of the first Fall term.

Students enrolled in the co-op program may switch to the regular MRP option with approval from the Associate Chair, Graduate Studies.
