The Government of Canada announced funding for several University of Waterloo faculty members through the New Frontiers Research Fund (NFRF).

“The New Frontiers in Research Fund supports high-risk, high-reward Canadian projects with the potential to spark transformational innovations,” said Charmaine Dean, vice-president, Research and International. “This year’s awardees from the University of Waterloo represent a variety of truly impactful research areas, including equitable approaches to climate change adaptation and improving eye health outcomes in children. Congratulations to the 2024 winners.”

The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) and its Members have elected this year’s new Fellows and named the incoming class of the RSC College.

One hundred and one new Fellows have been elected by their peers for their outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement. Recognition by the RSC for career achievement is the highest honour an individual can achieve in the Arts, Social Sciences and Sciences. One of those newly elected Fellows is electrical and computer engineering professor, Kerstin Dautenhahn.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo will help move fully autonomous vehicles much closer to reality now that they are the first to receive approval to test their innovations on all public roads in Ontario.

In a first for Canada, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, the Honourable Steven Del Duca, announced today that the province approved Waterloo’s three-year autonomous vehicle research program, under its AV pilot program. The Waterloo team is using a Lincoln MKZ hybrid sedan nicknamed Autonomoose.

In 2018, Canadians could see a woman’s face on their currency other than the Queen’s – and two weeks from now, they’ll find out which one. The Bank of Canada released a shortlist of five women ahead of an announcement on Dec. 8 when the winner will be chosen.

ECE Professor Lin Tan and her collaborators have won the ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award at the 2016 International Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering (FSE) for their paper entitled "Detecting Sensitive Data Disclosure via Bi-directional Text Correlation Analysis"
