Electrical and computer engineering (ECE) professor, Mahla Poudineh, won an international prize for women that recognizes excellence in science, technology, engineering, math, manufacturing and design.

Poudineh, who serves as director for ECE’s IDEATION lab, is one of six recipients of the Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM2D Scholars Award for Science. All six diverse, international female recipients were selected out of a competitive global applicant pool that garnered 650 entries from 40 countries.

For graduating students, convocation is a significant milestone, a time to celebrate their accomplishments in front of family and friends. A research team at the University of Waterloo played a key role in the development of a highly autonomous vehicle that Renesas Electronics America unveiled today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
 
Using sensors and powerful computers, the car is capable of detecting and responding to other vehicles, stop signs and traffic lights to provide a safer driving experience. For example, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications allow the vehicle to detect in advance when a traffic light will change.
