The 2017 recipients of the Waterloo Engineering Faculty and Staff awards for outstanding contributions to education and research will be celebrated by Engineering Dean Pearl Sullivan and colleagues at a dinner to be held in January.

ECE will be well-represented!

The Outstanding Staff Performance Award technical category winner is Fernando Rivero Hernandez in recognition of his professionalism, excellent work ethic and commitment to providing outstanding technical support to Engineering faculty, staff and students.

ECE Professor, Ehab El-Saadany, has been elevated to Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions to distributed generation planning, operation and control.

IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation.

MASc student, Shankha Chatterjee, and Professor Wojciech Golab have won the SSS 2017 Best Paper Award for their work "Self-Tuning Eventually-Consistent Data Stores" at the 19th International Symposium on Stabilization, Safety, and Security of Distributed Systems (SSS). 

SSS is an international forum for researchers and practitioners in the design and development of distributed systems with a focus on systems that are able to provide guarantees on their structure, performance, and/or security in the face of an adverse operational environment.

Four Electrical and Computer Engineering researchers have been awarded Canada Research Chairs (CRC):

ECE Professor Sherman Shen has been selected recipient of the IEEE Communications Society Education Award "for inspirational graduate student mentoring, research guidance, and teaching in wireless communication networks.”
 
Dr. Shen will be presented with the award in December at 2017 IEEE GLOBECOM in Singapore.

A Waterloo Engineering spinoff company has received a multi-million dollar injection from Intel Capital.

AdHawk Microsystems, co-founded by engineering alumni, has raised a $4.6 million USD Series A funding that will bring its microscopic eye-tracking technology to virtual reality and augmented reality headsets.

ECE Professor, Sujeet Chaudhuri, was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus on Saturday, October 21, at the University of Waterloo's 115^th Convocation ceremony.

An entrepreneur with strong ties to Waterloo Engineering claimed a $25,000 award handed out this week by a provincial organization dedicated to commercializing innovation.

Abdul Rehman, who is CEO of SSIMWAVE Inc. and earned a PhD in electrical engineering at Waterloo, won the Martin Walmsley Award for Entrepreneurship at the annual meeting of the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) in Toronto.

Nine Waterloo-led research projects will receive more than $17 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for infrastructure to support research.

The awards from CFI’s Innovation Fund were announced by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science.

Two of those awards involve professors from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering:
