ECE 668 - Distribution system engineering

Calendar description

This course covers the following topics in distribution engineering: Load Characteristics and distribution system load forecasting; Distribution system planning; Distribution system automation; Design and application of distribution transformers; Design and optimal operation of sub-transmission lines and distribution substations; Design considerations of primary and secondary distribution systems; Distribution system voltage regulation; Reactive power control for distribution systems; Application of capacitors to distribution systems; Calculation of voltage drops in lateral distribution systems; Calculation of power losses in distribution systems; Introduction to distribution system protection.

Objectives

  • Study distribution system elements and components.
  • Study the economical operation of distribution systems.
  • Study the protective schemes and devices for distribution systems.
  • Study the planning and expansion methodologies of distribution system.

  1. Distribution System Load Characteristics.
  2. Distribution system load forecasting. Discussion on the main differences between distribution system load forecasting and total system load forecasting.
  3. Distribution system planning and expansion.
  4. Distribution system automation and the main tools for system automation.
  5. Design and application of distribution transformers.
  6. Design and optimal operation of sub-transmission lines and distribution substations.
  7. Design aspects and practical considerations of primary and secondary distribution systems.
  8. Distribution system voltage regulation and equipment.
  9. Reactive power control for distribution systems.
  10. Application of series and shunt capacitors to distribution systems.
  11. Calculation of voltage drops in later al distribution systems and its effect on distribution system performance.
  12. Calculation of power losses in distribution systems and the practical methods to improve system efficiency.
  13. Reliability issues for distribution systems.
