Alternative sources of energy like solar energy are gaining importance in the wake of rising fuel costs, and concerns over carbon emissions. One of the factors determining efficiency in solar power is the angle at which light strikes the panel. With this in mind, students will design and implement a feedback controller for a simple solar tracking system. The students will test their devices in a test cell and compete to see whose design is able to extract the most solar energy. Students must interface an embedded micro controller with a light sensor and implement a simple controller in software to align the solar array to the light source.
