Machine shop training: Machining a keychain
Students at the University of Waterloo are often placed in manufacturing positions during their co-operative work terms where they interact extensively with maintenance workers, contractors, and other technical staff. Entering into these roles with limited hands-on machining skills places these students at a disadvantage.
The Benefits
As many students start their first work term after only 12 weeks of on-campus experience, they need very early exposure to practical activities. The activity provides a fun, confidence-building project in the Engineering Student Machine Shop.
Overview
Each student completes the machining, and assembly of a small keychain, which they then get to keep as a keepsake. Over 500 engineering students are provided early exposure to the Student Machine Shop each fall, creating a desire and confidence to pursue additional experience.
