James Nugent reflects on teaching in Nanjing, China
Every year, professors from the Faculty of Environment travel to Nanjing, China to teach students at the Nanjing University of Finance and Economics (NUFE). Chinese students in this special partnership program will come to study at the University of Waterloo in their third year, enrolled in the Environment and Business programme.
This summer approximately fifty students at NUFE were taught by SERS professor Dr. James Nugent. “Teaching in Nanjing is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Chinese culture,” Nugent reflected. “The faculty, staff and students are most welcoming and NUFE is a beautiful campus.”
Students are taught Introduction to Environmental Studies (ENVS 195) and Introduction to Environment and Business (ENBUS 102). According to Prof. Nugent, students are eager to learn and to gain new experiences.
NUFE has an active campus life, with live music, drama and calligraphy clubs, and several sports such as basketball and table tennis.
All students at NUFE live in campus residences. There are many delicious food options featuring cuisine from different regions of China.
We look forward to welcoming a new cohort of NUFE students to the University of Waterloo in the fall. Nugent pointed out that learning through this partnership goes in both directions. “China is an increasingly important player in the green economy,” Nugent explained. “We have much to learn from one another.”
