Environment and Resource Studies PhD candidate Beth Timmers awarded $20,000 by The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to assess food security in Jamaica amid urbanization, climate change and rural transformation.

Timmers' study will demonstrate which domestically-produced crops contribute to food security in Kingston, Jamaica's largest city, and will provide useful insight on rural dynamics to the Hungry Cities Initiative’s focus on urban issues.

The study will also look at enabling factors and barriers to achieving food security through domestic agriculture by figuring out the key linkages for domestically-produced crops to feed low-income city dwellers. Her research will also search for opportunities to expand smallholder agriculture, consistent with the Government of Jamaica’s ongoing food localization campaign.

IDRC Doctoral Research Awards (IDRAs) support research aligned with IDRC’s mandate and thematic priorities.
