Lisa Horn graduated in 2012 and has been working as an ecologist at an environmental consulting company and is currently working on her Masters degree in biology at York University.
What years were you at ERS/SERS?
2008-2012
What degree did you complete in ERS/SERS?
Bachelor of Environmental Studies, Honours Environment and Resource Studies
What was your favourite thing about your program/time at SERS?
My favourite thing about the program was the flexibility to tailor my educational experience to my interests. Being more drawn to ecology, I was able to take courses on relevant subjects, gain experience through the practical workshops offered by the Ecology Lab, and also tailor my honours thesis project to develop relevant skills. The program also gave me the flexibility to study abroad. I spent my fourth year in Germany, taking environmental courses at the University of Freiburg. Taking university level courses abroad in another language was a very enriching (and challenging) experience and I’m grateful to have had that opportunity.
What was your favourite course and/or learning experience (and why?) in SERS?
My favourite courses were Field Ecology and Restoration Ecology. Both of these courses allowed you to get out of the classroom and into the field to start seeing the practical applications of what we were learning about.
What are you doing now that is meaningful to you?
Since graduating from ERS, I’ve been working as an ecologist at an environmental consulting company. Now, I’ve switched to part-time as I’ve gone back to school to pursue a M.Sc. in Biology at York University, where I’m investigating the effects of climate change in wintering habitats of migratory songbirds on their arrival condition in Ontario. Both my work and my research are meaningful to me in different ways, but one thing that is especially meaningful is that I’ve had the opportunity to join the Board of Directors of FLAP Canada, an organization advocating for a bird safe urban environment.
If applicable, how has what you learned/experienced in SERS assist with what you are doing now?
The ERS program allowed me the opportunity to develop field skills which were relevant in the job market, and I also learned the importance and value of seeking out experiences and opportunities beyond the classroom.
