The Longhouse Labs is a program about empowering and creating dedicated space for Indigenous-led experiences and learning. It aims to create sustainable pathways for Indigenous artists that enable Indigenous knowledge and cultural practices to broadly permeate studio art learning.
During the week of November 14-18, Fine Arts will be hosting our inaugural guest artist / Longhouse Labs Fellow, Nunatsiavut carver Billy Gauthier. There are several activities we would like to invite you to join.
Billy will be giving an Artist Talk at the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery (KWAG), 101 Queen Street North, Kitchener. The evening will end with an open conversation and questions from the audience. More information can be on the CAFKA website.
Open to all! In honour of Billy’s visit we are sponsoring a soup day at the Waterloo Indigenous Student Services (WISC). Held on campus at St. Paul's University College.
Immediately following the WISC lunch, come mingle in the University of Waterloo Art Gallery (UWAG). Refreshments will be served! It is a chance to talk to Billy, and we will be giving tours of the future Longhouse Labs space.
Billy will present a demonstration of wood carving to get students excited about the process. Space is limited, and only open to Fine Arts students. Students can sign up by emailing Logan MacDonald.
The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
