This week, University of Waterloo's 118 convocation takes place, with more than 6000 students claiming their degrees, diplomas and certificates, including 1289 graduate students.  Convocation is also a special time for the university to celebrate distinguished students and faculty - including those who have done an exemplary job of supervising graduate students.

The Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision was established by Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs and the Graduate Student Association (GSA) to recognize exemplary faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in graduate student supervision. Normally, three faculty members are recognized annually.

This years winners are:

Dr. David Hammond, a Professor in the School of Public Health & Health Systems in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. In just 12 years, Professor Hammond has supervised approximately 30 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Students and colleagues who supported Dr. Hammond’s nomination for this award, described Dave’s mentorship as a combination of inspiration, support and collegiality. He is praised for his commitment to students and the advancement of their learning, success and careers. They value his ongoing mentorship long after graduation.

Dr. Randy Harris, has been a Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature since 1992. Throughout his career at Waterloo he has supervised seven doctoral and five master’s students. He has demonstrated a remarkably strong commitment to graduate studies and graduate students, including the time he served as the Associate Chair Graduate Studies.

Dr. Cameron Stewart is the Canada Research Chair in Number Theory and has been a Professor in the Department of Pure Mathematics since 1978. Over his career, he has supervised 22 master’s students, 13 doctoral students and 18 postdoctoral fellows. In recognition of his exceptional scholarly achievement and international pre-eminence, he was designated University Professor in 2005.

Congratulations to all!
