Workshop your resumé

How to think like an employer

Friday, January 23, 2026 2:30 pm - 3:50 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Working on your resumé? Join this session led by Graeme Beaton from the Centre for Career Development for tips and strategies for crafting a document that appeals to employers in the current world of work. Learn how to identify what employers want, and how to showcase the evidence that you have it. We’ll also discuss resumé writing in the age of AI — how to navigate the Applicant Tracking System (ATS), used by many employers to manage the hiring process, and how to avoid common mistakes if you’re using AI to help write your job applications. Please bring a copy (or draft) of your resumé, as there will be opportunities to work on your document throughout the session.

Pre-workshop reflection questions:

  1. What are the work environments or career opportunities you wish to pursue? What are 2-3 key skills necessary for working in them (remember to include transferable "soft" skills)? How have you identified that these are in demand?
  2. What “evidence” demonstrates that you have these skills (e.g., work experience, volunteer experience, relevant courses, research, projects, extracurriculars)?
