Indigenous Clean Energy in Canada - Leadership, Self-Determination, and Next Steps
Indigenous communities across Canada are a powerful force for change in Canada's transition to a clean energy future. Apart from crown and private utilities, Indigenous communities and enterprises are the largest single owner of clean energy assets in the country. And this is only the beginning. In this seminar, I'll share what this leadership looks like drawing on stories from communities I've had the privilege of working with through Indigenous Clean Energy. I'll share why this work is so empowering for communities. Finally, we'll look at emerging opportunities for clean energy and how we can support this on-going growth.
Ian Scholten originally hails from Treaty 6 territory in central Alberta and currently calls unceded Algonquin Territory home (Ottawa, ON). Ian graduated from Knowledge Integration in 2015 (Joint Honours Anthropology with Collaborative Design Specialization). Shortly after graduating, he joined the Indigenous Clean Energy team to help launch the 20/20 Catalysts Program, a national Indigenous clean energy capacity building program. From there he led the launch of the ICE Network and now leads Bringing It Home, a collaborative effort to scale up energy efficiency projects led by Indigenous communities. Ian has had the privilege and honour of connecting with Indigenous leaders from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
