Beth Sandore Namachchivaya appointed University Librarian

On April 19, Ian Orchard, Vice-President Academic & Provost, announced the appointment of Beth Sandore Namachchivaya as University Librarian, effective August 1, 2017.

Beth is currently Associate University Librarian for Research, Associate Dean of Libraries, and Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

She has been Visiting Librarian at University of California, Berkeley Library and California Digital Library, and has participated in the Research Library Leadership Fellows program of the Association of Research Libraries. Beth has a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics from The College of Wooster in Ohio, and received her Masters from the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago.

Beth brings significant leadership experience specific to academic libraries, expertise in research and information technology, and has led the development of information discovery systems and digital preservation programs. Her research and publications focus on "developing methods, tools and programs that enable digitally-intensive research, primarily for the humanities, arts and social sciences. I focus, in particular, on discovery tools for effective text data mining, research analytics, and effective data curation and stewardship for different types of data throughout the data lifecycle."
 
As University Librarian, she will be a member of the University’s senior leadership team, and will provide overall direction for the delivery of library services and resources to meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of Waterloo’s diverse academic community. The Library welcomes Beth during this exciting period of transition and transformation.
