University of Waterloo Library supporter, Peter Sims, passed away on November 22 in Kitchener.
A lawyer with strong ties to the Kitchener-Waterloo community, Peter’s connection to the University of Waterloo began with his father - a founding member of the University’s Board of Governors. Peter himself served as Chair of the Board of Governors from 1994 to 1997, and Chair of the Friends of the Library Board in 1999. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Waterloo in 1999.
The donations made by Peter and his wife, Betty, over the years led to the creation of the Peter and Betty Sims Reading Room, the Sims Family Library Endowment Fund which supports the ongoing development of the Library’s journal collections, and the Founders Hall study and collaboration space in Hagey Hub. The Sims Student Study Galleria in the Davis Centre Library was named in his honour.
A plaque in the Reading Room on the third floor of the Dana Porter Library recognizes the couple’s “outstanding friendship and support of the Library.” Peter was predeceased by his wife Betty. Their generous contributions are a lasting legacy that will continue to support the Library and its users for many years to come.
