Library staff update

Library staff had the pleasure of welcoming 12 new colleagues during 2015. In addition, seven library staff were promoted or changed positions during the year. Please meet our new colleagues.

Sarah Brown
Liaison Librarian (Philosophy, Sociology and Legal Studies, Women's Studies)
Sarah had been in this role on contract and has held other liaison portfolios prior to taking on these subject areas. She holds a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from the University of Western Ontario (2013) and an Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA), Double Major in Sociology and Criminal Studies from Western as well. Prior to becoming a librarian Sarah worked in social services for both the John Howard Society and Ontario Works.

Sue Burns
Coordinator, Library Accessibility Services & Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Advisor
Sue has a long and distinguished history of working with and for persons with disabilities. Most recently she was the assistive technologist/alternate format coordinator in the Services for Students with Disabilities office at the University of Western Ontario Library. It was at Western where she also gained her MLIS degree and since that time has been working in a variety of libraries in Nova Scotia. Sue was also instrumental in getting the Alternate Educational Resources for Ontario (AERO) service, a web-based digital repository operated by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities started. The repository provides alternate format textbooks to students.

Caitlin Carter
Liaison Librarian (Pharmacy)
Caitlin holds a MLIS degree from the University of Western Ontario (2010). Prior to arriving at Waterloo she was a client services librarian at the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. In this role, Caitlin’s main duties included providing reference services and instruction to health region staff, in addition to attending rounds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Caitlin is located at the School of Pharmacy, Kitchener.

Shannon Gordon
Bibliometrics & Research Impact Librarian
Shannon works closely with colleagues in the Library, Institutional Analysis and Planning, Office of Research, and the University’s Working Group on Bibliometrics. In this role, Shannon supports discipline-level bibliometric analyses and serves as a resource on research impact issues relevant to faculty, librarians, and other staff. Shannon's first role at the University of Waterloo began in 2012 as liaison librarian, Pharmacy. Previously, Shannon spent 2006-2012 with Memorial University Libraries in St. John’s, Newfoundland, both as a health sciences librarian liaising in several clinical areas, as well as a public services librarian with the Queen Elizabeth II Library. Shannon received her MLIS from the University of Western Ontario in 2006 and her BA from Memorial University in 2004.

Beverly Hershey
Associate Director of Advancement, Library
Bev had been seconded to the position of manager, library advancement since August 2013. Prior to her secondment, she was an associate director in the Office of Advancement, where she worked in various capacities since coming to the University of Waterloo in 1998. Before her arrival at UWaterloo, she worked in various roles including: director, Community Information Centre of Waterloo Region; executive-director, Rotary Regional Adult Services, and co-ordinator, with Lutherwood Employment Counselling. Bev has a Master of Education (Adult Education), University of Toronto and a BA, Wilfrid Laurier University.

Alison Hitchens
Head, Digital Initiatives
Alison recently moved from her role as cataloguing and metadata librarian to head, Digital Initiatives. In this new role, Alison is involved in leading and facilitating strategic digital library projects. Current projects in Digital Initiatives include continued development of Waterloo's institutional repository, UWSpace; developing a digital repository for other local collections such as digitized photographs, and technical advancement of the Library’s web presence. Alison has also served as the chair of the TriUniversity Group of Libraries (TUG) Primo team for the past seven years and is very active in the international Primo user group community.

Lisa Maenpaa
Financial Administrator
Lisa is a qualified accountant and is familiar with UWaterloo, particularly the Office of Research, having served as a research finance training and compliance officer and previously as a research financial analyst. Prior to working at Waterloo, Lisa had various positions at Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) in which she worked closely with international partners.

Nick Maier
Weekend/Evening Supervisor
Nick has been a member of the Circulation Services team since 2011 when he started as a student staff member at the circulation desk. For the past two years Nick has been working on contract as a weekend/evening supervisor and now moves into this role on a permanent basis. Nick will continue to work at both the Davis Centre and Dana Porter libraries on a rotating schedule.

Effie Patelos
Architecture Librarian
Effie is located at the Musagetes Architecture Library in Cambridge. She has a Master of Information, Library & Information Science (MI) from University of Toronto; a Bachelor of Architecture (professional) from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the School of Architecture here at the University of Waterloo. As a librarian, Effie has worked at the Shore + Moffat Library in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture at the University of Toronto and at Concordia University Library. Before coming to Waterloo Effie was a cataloguer at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. Prior to getting her MI degree Effie worked as an architect for eight years.

Sue Plouffe
Library Associate, Special Collections & Archives
Sue brings a wealth of archives and special collections experience as she spent the last seven years working as an information services and local history assistant at the Waterloo Public Library (WPL). Prior to the WPL, Sue worked at the Archives of the Archdiocese of Toronto.

Nick Richbell
Head, Special Collections & Archives
Nick earned his Master of Library and Information Studies at McGill University in 2011, and he holds a BA (Honours) in French and Spanish from the University of Westminster (UK). Before coming to Waterloo, Nick held several roles at Canadian Pacific (CP) in Montreal, working in their corporate archives, most recently as a permanent manager of their corporate archives and special collections. Nick has also served as a project archivist at McGill University at the McGill University Archives, and as collections registrar and archivist at McGill University Health Sciences Centre since graduation and prior to his work at CP.

Wioletta Szablewski
Weekend Supervisor
Wioletta is the Davis weekend supervisor in Circulation Services after working in this capacity on secondment from Food Services. Wioletta had worked with us as a casual staff member for many years before moving on to work in Food Services for a few years, where she gained more experience in customer service and in supervision.

Jan Uhde
Library Associate, Information Services and Resources (ISR)
Jan has been with us in Davis ISR for two years on contract. During this time we got to know and appreciate Jan’s work: one of his talents is teaching and he has good naturedly let us pick his brains on theory and techniques, helping us immensely.

Markus Wieland
GIS Specialist
Markus’ main responsibilities include providing advanced geospatial technical information services, providing library instruction and developing geospatial digital projects. Markus is originally from Collingwood, and has been living in the Kitchener-Waterloo area for the last two and a half years. At a young age Markus had a love of geography and travel which became quite literal when he took up rally racing in his late twenties. To support his automotive habits, Markus became a software engineer, moved on to technical design and eventually arrived at the field of Geographic Information Systems. Markus taught GIS at Fleming College for five years, and then worked as a GIS technician at Waterloo North Hydro. Markus very much looks forward to working with staff and students at the Geospatial Centre and beyond!
