Nanotechnology Engineering students Chris Taylor, Noah DeBrincat, Karolyn Mackowiak, Ben Milligan and Thomas Dunlop are enjoying the University of Waterloo’s entrepreneurial advantage as they develop their fourth-year Capstone Design project into a commercial venture.
Fourth-year Nanotechnology Engineering student Beatrice Sacripanti spent her fall 2017 term living in Velocity Residence, where she took advantage of many opportunities to brainstorm, learn, and network with other entrepreneurially minded students and founders in the Velocity ecosystem. Throughout the many events she has attended, she was able to learn from a great network of mentors and entrepreneurs.
More than 25 million children across North America suffer from some form of season allergies. And yet one in four children suffer from an inability to swallow pills in order to be medicated. Avro Life Science believes it can help, by offering medicated stickers to deliver seasonal allergy medication to children. Avro now has a show of support from the Dyson Foundation, winning National Runners Up for the James Dyson Award.

VivaSpire includes Chris Hajduk and John Grousopoulos. They are developing an innovative portable oxygen delivery system for patients in need of oxygen therapy.
Congratulations to Vivaspire founders John Grousopoulos, Mostafa Saquib and Chris Hajduk, as well as their fellow NE Capstone Design project team member Pablo Enrique, for their award-winning concept: a lightweight oxygen therapy delivery device that uses nanotechnology to capture, store and deliver oxygen.
Nanotechnology Engineering’s Capstone Design teams demonstrated strong research, business and persuasive skills at this year’s Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards for Capstone Design. From among 44 entries, 4 NE teams made the list of 15 finalists for the pitch competition and 2 of them won $10,000 prizes for their projects.
Jatin Patil, a third-year University of Waterloo Nanotechnology Engineering student, has enjoyed some exciting co-op positions in research laboratories of prestigious schools.

Congratulation to Amr Abdelgawad, NE graduate and NERv Technologies Inc. co-founder, for winning the 2017 Enactus Canada Student Entrepreneur National Competition. With the win, Amr receives $10,000 and the title of 2017 Student Entrepreneur National Champion.
Congratulations to the HeatFlex team, who won the GM Canada People’s Choice Award at the 2017 Nanotechnology Engineering Capstone Design Symposium.
HeatFlex’s Supavannan Jeyabalachandran, Amanda Victorious, Anahita Malvea, Tuba Opel and Mayuran Saravanapavanantham won the award for integrating conductive materials into a polymer matrix to create flexible, heat-generating fabric that can be used to create clothing.
While conventional apparel relies on insulation to keep its wearer warm on a cold day, HeatFlex aims to create clothing that can warm the wearer.
Teams of fourth-year NE students presented the results of their Capstone Design projects at the program’s Design Symposium on March 24, 2017. Capstone Design challenges students to work in teams, applying the skills and knowledge they learned through their undergraduate degree, to conceptualize and design a solution to a real-world problem.
