Professor Jennifer Dean on CTV news – Difficulties of settling into a new community

Tuesday, August 2, 2022

Moving to Canada comes with challenges, such as not being able to find work. On Tuesday July 26, Dr. Jennifer Dean, Associate Professor in the School of Planning, was featured in a brief clip on CTV news, and says this is common for newcomers due to lack of recognition of foreign credentials. She mentions that Canadian businesses prefer experiences in the workforce in Canada and this of course, is a challenge for newcomers to the country who do not have this experience.

Dr. Dean’s research explores the links between human mobility and well-being in place, including the health of immigrants settling in Canadian communities. Dr. Dean’s work has previously explored the health impacts of precarious employment among highly skilled newcomers; employment as a determinant of settlement and mobility; and place-based policies to attract and retain newcomers for community well-being. She is currently the Principal Investigator of a SSHRC-funded research grant entitled: Immigrant settlement in second and third-tier communities: Exploring access to the social determinants of health and is Co-Editor of a special issue in the journal of Wellbeing, Space & Society on Migration, Settlement and Well-Being in and of Place.
