Our Religion, Culture, and Spirituality (RCS) program at the University of Waterloo offers a flexible and interdisciplinary approach to exploring how belief systems shape individuals, communities, and cultures across time and place. Rooted in a commitment to critical thinking and quality undergraduate teaching, RCS courses encourage students to ask important questions and see the big picture.

Religion, Culture, and Spirituality (RCS) is a unique discipline that thinks critically about the foundations of social, political, economic, philosophical, and ethical decision-making, and their mutual acceptance in society. Understanding the complex relationship between religion, culture, spirituality and societal norms prepares us to meaningfully engage in an increasingly diverse world. It also provides a deeper understanding of why certain cultural traditions and milestones are celebrated, and others are kept private.

RCS joined the School of Social, Political and Historical Research (SSPHR) in July of 2026. Our programming receives direction from the SSPHR leadership team and administrative services and advising are managed by the SSPHR staff.

Our faculty at SSPHR have varied research interests and also contribute to other university departments and programs, including: Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, History, Philosophy, Gender and Social Justice, Classical Studies, Health Humanities, Jewish Studies, Studies in Islamic and Arabic Cultures. Drawing from multiple perspectives, we aim to provide a multifaceted landscape of ideas and knowledge.
