T-Coils

Background

The rapid expansion of hyperscale data centers and AI infrastructure necessitates high-speed electro-optic links, yet electrical front-end circuits frequently act as performance bottlenecks. While bridged T-coil circuits are commonly employed to extend bandwidth without increasing power consumption, traditional single-ended implementations occupy substantial silicon area, a problem exacerbated in differential systems where the use of two separate coils doubles the footprint and manufacturing cost.  Furthermore, conventional T-coil designs offer diminishing speed improvements in advanced semiconductor nodes and often suffer from signal degradation due to unmodeled magnetic interactions and other implementation impairments when coils are placed in close proximity to save space.

Description of the invention

This design method for high-speed circuits utilizes a generalized differential bridged T-coil configuration that integrates two T-coils into a single physical footprint. The circuit incorporates optimized magnetic coupling parameters to manage inter-coil interactions and enhance bandwidth extension. A single-ended equivalent circuit model captures values for inductors, capacitors, and the specific coupling coefficients based on given termination resistance and load capacitance constraints.

  • Generalized model for differential bridged T-coils.
  • Formalized optimization procedure for multi-coupling differential T-coils.
  • Single-ended equivalent circuit model for differential T-coils.
