November 2025 Collaborative and Connected Research Panel

University of Waterloo faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to the second installment of the Collaborative and Connected Research Panel Series, hosted by the Office of the Vice-President, Research and International and the Faculty of Health.

The November event will bring together current department chairs and school directors to discuss how to build collaborative and co-operative relationships. The conversation will focus on building collaboration in research and educational settings, including how collaboration can enable new forms of professional relationships and generate creativity. The panel will also address the fact that collaborative and co-operative programming requires effort and focused leadership during institutional transitions.

The panelists are:

  • Lisa Aultman-Hall, Professor and Chair, Systems Design Engineering (SYDE), University of Waterloo
  • Jasmin Habib, Professor and Chair, Department of Political Science, University of Waterloo
  • Ellen MacEachen, Professor and Director, School of Public Health Sciences, University of Waterloo

The panel will be moderated by Kelly Grindrod, Associate Professor of Pharmacy and Associate Director, Clinical Education, University of Waterloo.

Suzan Ilcan, Professor and University Research Chair, Sociology and Legal Studies, is lead organizer of the panel series.

About the panelists:

Lisa Aultman-Hall

Dr. Lisa Aultman-Hall is Professor and Chair of Systems Design Engineering (SYDE) at the University of Waterloo. SYDE includes two interdisciplinary programs and 42 diverse faculty members. Dr. Aultman-Hall’s research focuses on sustainable transportation systems, including long-distance travel and electric vehicle charging behaviours. She has served in leadership roles at the interdisciplinary University of Vermont Transportation Research Centre and several other centres.

Jasmin Habib

Dr. Jasmin Habib is Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Waterloo. Her research examines dispossession and displacement under colonialism, with a focus on cultural politics in Canada, the United States, and Israel/Palestine. Her work demonstrates a sustained commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and collaborative research networks in local, national, and transnational contexts. Dr. Habib is the author of Israel, Diaspora and the Routes of National Belonging (University of Toronto Press), among other publications.

Ellen MacEachen

Dr. Ellen MacEachen is Professor and Director in the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. The School has 36 faculty members with a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds. Her own research is sociological in nature. She uses qualitative research methods to examine worker vulnerability, precarious employment, and the changing nature of work, among other scholarly journal publications. In addition to other scholarly publications, Dr. MacEachen’s recent publication is The Science and Politics of Work Disability Policy (Routledge).

About the moderator:

Kelly Grindrod

Dr. Kelly Grindrod is Associate Professor of Pharmacy and Associate Director, Clinical Education, University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on improving how we manage medications. She is currently examining how to make vaccine injections safer. Dr. Grindrod’s most recent work appears in Canadian Family Physician, Canadian Pharmacists Journal, Journal of Nursing Regulation, and Vaccine.
