For more than 50 years, Dr. Mary Thompson has helped uncover the stories hidden in data — shaping research, informing public policy and mentoring generations of students at the University of Waterloo. Now, her extraordinary contributions to statistics and public service have earned one of Canada's highest civilian honours: appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
From improving how scientists study populations to helping evaluate tobacco control policies around the world, Thompson’s work has had a lasting impact far beyond the classroom. As a champion of collaboration, equity and innovation, she has dedicated her career to using evidence to tackle some of society’s most complex challenges.
