The Sam Visaisouk Mentorship Program has been established to honour the memory and lasting contributions of Sam Visaisouk, whose vision, experience, and mentorship played a formative role in the development of startup commercialization at the University of Waterloo.
From 2007 to 2015, Sam Visaisouk served Waterloo and the Waterloo Commercialization Office (WatCo) as a trusted consultant and mentor during a formative period in the growth of the university’s startup commercialization activities. At that time, WatCo was primarily focused on licensing transactions and had limited direct experience in supporting startup creation. Concurrently, the office underwent significant expansion, adding several new technology transfer professionals who were themselves entering the field for the first time. Sam brought to this environment a rare combination of entrepreneurial experience, business judgment, and patient mentorship. He worked closely with WatCo Technology Managers and faculty researchers to identify promising platform technologies, assess market opportunities and business models, clarify commercialization pathways, and help research teams develop a realistic understanding of both the opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurship.
Once a decision was made to pursue a startup, Sam played a central role in transforming promising research into functioning companies. He guided teams through incorporation, shareholder agreements, governance structures, founder equity arrangements, and other foundational requirements necessary to establish a new venture. Equally important, he recruited technical talent from within research groups, mentored early team members as they transitioned into startup environments, and in several cases attracted experienced management leaders to strengthen operations, strategic planning, and investment readiness. Sam directly supported the creation of four startup companies, including Tyromer Inc., the award-winning sustainable rubber recycling company founded on technology developed by Dr. Costas Tzoganakis in the Department of Chemical Engineering. As CEO beginning in approximately 2011, Sam led Tyromer through multiple investment and non-dilutive funding rounds and helped establish the company on a path that continues today with growing international traction in the tire recycling sector.
Beyond these tangible accomplishments, Sam left an enduring mark on WatCo through his mentorship of both startup founders and commercialization professionals. He drew upon decades of experience in building, operating, and successfully exiting businesses to guide others with generosity and humility. He was known for his calm demeanor in the face of inevitable business adversity, his steady encouragement, and his well-timed humour that could ease even the most difficult conversation. The Sam Visaisouk Mentorship Program is named in his honour to reflect the spirit in which he served Waterloo: providing thoughtful, practical, and compassionate mentorship to researcher teams who are considering the courageous step of pursuing startup entrepreneurship. Through this program, Sam’s legacy of mentorship, entrepreneurship, and unwavering support for innovators will continue to inspire future generations of Waterloo founders.
