About the Event
Florence Nightingale Day is a free annual event hosted by the University of Waterloo’s Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, in partnership with the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI) and Women in Mathematics (WiM). Open to high school students in Grades 10–12 across the Kitchener-Waterloo Region, the day encourages girls and students from underrepresented groups to explore the power of data.
What to Expect
Each year, attendees dive into hands-on workshops, interactive problem-solving games, and insightful panel discussions with university researchers and industry leaders. Participants get a clear look at degree options and career trajectories in statistics, data science, and actuarial science—with lunch and mentorship included.
The Inspiration
Celebrated internationally, the day honours Florence Nightingale—not only as the founder of modern nursing, but as an influential statistician and pioneer of visual data storytelling. The initiative’s mission is to inspire a diverse, innovative community of students to lead the future of statistical and data sciences.
Who Should Attend?
-
High school students in Grades 10–12 across the Kitchener-Waterloo Region and surrounding areas.
-
Open to all students curious about math, data, problem-solving, or career paths in STEM. No prior background in advanced statistics, coding, or data science is required.
-
We especially encourage girls, young women, and students from underrepresented groups in mathematics and statistics to participate.
This event helped me learn more about the fields of math and statistics and think more about my post-secondary plans. I met friendly and professional people who shared their experiences and helped me understand these subjects better.
