Circle Learning Method Workshop

Thursday, May 1, 2025 10:30 am - 12:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

How do you get students to attend and learn in your classes in these days of infinite online resources ? Circle Learning Method may be the answer? Learn it yourself first here!

This workshop aims to introduce educators to the Circle Learning Method (CLM), an innovative teaching approach, a method that has been used by indigenous communities as a predominant method, enhances engagement, collaboration, and comprehension in engineering courses, even with a large amount of mathematical content. Students learn in a participatory manner, and educators evaluate their learning simultaneously. The workshop will outline CLM principles of collaboration, iterative learning, and inclusivity, followed by a discussion on its benefits for university courses. Participants will explore strategies for adapting CLM to small classes (<12 students) through personalized engagement and peer mentoring, and for large classes (even when size is >80 students) using subgroup activities, digital tools, and joint problem-solving. A hands-on demonstration will allow participants to experience the method through role-playing, simulating both student and facilitator roles.

Coaches: Kumaraswamy Ponnambalam and Matt Borland, Systems Design Engineering
