Research Seminar - Elevating Biomechanical Assessments of Orthopaedic Implants

Friday, May 10, 2024 11:00 am - 12:15 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Presenter Dr. Jonathan Kusins

Dr. Jonathan Kusins is a Research Engineer within the New Product Introduction team at Paragon 28. He previously obtained his PhD from Western University where he developed full-field experimental techniques, utilizing microCT imaging and digital volume correlation (DVC) methods to analyze the internal load distribution within the shoulder. Prior to Paragon 28, Jonathan also worked within the Research and Development group at NuVasive where he led research and testing strategies to bring novel additively manufactured spinal interbody cages that improve patient outcomes from concept to market. Currently at Paragon 28, Jonathan leads the preclinical biomechanics research division, leveraging morphological, experimental, and computational modelling approaches to inform product development and design. Particularly, Jonathan is a strong advocate for the implementation of pre-clinical biomechanical assessments to provide evidence surrounding the safety and efficacy of medical devices prior to being placed in patients.

Abstract

Orthopaedic implants have transformed lives, allowing individuals to preserve joint mobility prolonging overall quality of life. While these components are undoubtedly useful, they can also present difficult challenges, failing prematurely or inadvertently, stressing the importance of pre-clinical testing to ensure safety and efficacy before entering the market. In this context, development of biomechanical evaluations that combine high resolution microCT imaging with mechanical testing, aiming to improve our understanding of the internal load distribution within the human joint will be shared. Furthermore, current strategies in research and standardized testing currently performed for orthopaedic implants, and potential future directions will be discussed.
