Department of Systems Design Engineering Featured Speakers

Lisa Aultman-Hall
Professor and Chair

 	 Lisa Aultman-Hall

Dr. Lisa Aultman-Hall is Professor and Chair of the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Aultman-Hall focuses on transportation systems, especially methods to collect unique databases for modeling and analysis of long-distance travel, transportation sector emissions, network resiliency, streetscape design, and non-motorized transportation.

Dr. Elise Laende
Assistant Professor

Elise Laende

Dr. Elise Laende completed a PhD Biomedical Engineering at Dalhousie University, using high-resolution imaging techniques to quantify implant fixation in patients. Her current post-doctoral work at Queen’s University and the Kingston Health Sciences Centre is focused on the application of markerless motion capture technology to measure biomechanics in orthopaedic patients.

Dr. Robert Hunter
Lecturer

Robert Hunter

Dr. Rob Hunter received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Ottawa in 2022 and joined the SYDE/BME department in September of 2023. His teaching interests surround stakeholder-centered and co-operative design methods, drawing on his experience in medical device, and ergonomic musical instrument design.

Dr. Charbel Azzi
Lecturer

charbel square

Dr. Charbel Azzi received his MASc and PhD in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 2015 and 2022 respectively. He worked in Industry as team lead in 2013-2014, and Software Engineer for startup companies in Canada in 2014-2015 and 2022. His current research focuses on Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence applied to Robotics.

Dr. Reem Roufail
Lecturer

Reem Roufail

Dr. Reem Roufail completed her Doctorate in Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia in 2011. Her research focuses on design improvement using innovative manufacturing and a comprehensive understanding of material life cycle. Dr. Roufail's research works towards understanding current technologies in heavy industries and working on enhancing or discovering novel approaches.

Dr. Bryan Tripp
Associate Professor

Bryan

Dr. Bryan Tripp uses neurobiological models and deep learning to study how the brain processes information. He is also interested in applying these models in challenging robotics tasks, to better understand how the brain deals with the complex physical world. Recent progress in his lab is a paper on the first deep-network architecture based quantitatively on a large cortical network (Tripp, 2019).

Orion Bruckman
Lab Instructor

Orion Bruckman

Orion Bruckman has 8 years of industry experience at three computer and consumer electronic organizations as a Research and Development Engineer. Currently, he is a lab instructor for the Systems Design Engineering Department. Moving into his 15th year at the university, Orion teaches analog and digital lab courses.

Andrew Atkinson
Ojala Communications Professional-in-Residence

Andrew Atkinson

Andrew Atkinson has a decade of teaching experience in English, Contemporary Studies, and Game Design programs, and experience in EdTech as an Instructional Designer with D2L.  He brings skills from these backgrounds to the role of Ojala Communications Professional-in-Residence in SYDE and BME, where he helps student improve oral and graphical communication.
