Rasmus Lerdorf, SYDE'93 alumnus, is the recipient of the Faculty of Engineering 2017 Alumni Achievement Medal for Professional Achievement. Twenty-two years ago, he single-handedly created the PHP scripting language, which was the first simple and elegant approach to allowing dynamic content on web pages. Today, PHP powers the vast majority of the world’s websites, and no other software in the world has had a greater influence on the Internet, an incredible impact.
Currently employed by Etsy as a distinguished engineer, Ramus has also worked for several other companies throughout his impressive career including WePay and Yahoo, where Rasmus created a security tool known as “scanmus”, which is one of the key pieces of the company’s security toolkit.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Indigenous Initiatives Office.
