Extra course during an academic term
You must have 75% in your last academic term in order to take an extra (6th) course during a regular academic term. This is only applicable to students in 2A and above. Those in 1B have different requirements and those in 1A are not allowed to take an extra course. If you are in first year, please contact the first year engineering office.
Taking an extra does not mean that you can reduce your course load during a regular academic term.
You are not charged extra for an extra course during a regular academic term. It is part of your tuition.
You cannot register on Quest to take an extra course. A Course Override Form must be completed and submitted to the Undergraduate Coordinator (if any instructor overrides are required they must be obtained prior to submitting the form).
The extra course must be coded so that it doesn't count in your average. You need to inform the Undergraduate Coordinator whether the course is DRNA or NRNA or TRIA
- DRNA: Degree Requirement, Not in Average means the course will be used as a complementary or technical elective or taken to clear a failure or for an option,, specialization or minor.
- NRNA: Not a Degree Requirement, Not in Average means you are taking the course for interest only and the course does not contribute to your engineering department requirements at all.
- TRIA: Term Requirement, In Average means the course is to be applied toward the Accelerated Master’s Program. It will be taken as part of your full term requirements but will not be needed to meet your program requirements (you will have completed these by this point) and as such will be counted in your average. ). Note that if you take the grad course as a sixth course then it should be coded NRNA.
A course marked DRNA will count in the cumulative failed count
Extra course during work term
You must have 65% in your last academic term in order to take an academic course during a co-op work term. The fee is approximately $1500 per course for domestic students. This is only applicable to students in a co-op term after their 2A school term and above. It is not possible to take an extra course during a student's first co-op after 1A/1B. If you are in first year, please contact the first year engineering office.

You cannot register on Quest to take a course during your work term. A Course Override Form must be completed and submitted to the Undergraduate Coordinator (if any instructor overrides are required they must be obtained prior to submitting the form).
Note: Your first priority is to your job. Remember that you are representing the University of Waterloo on your work term and proper consideration should be given if you are deciding to take a course. If it is through the day, you should check with your Employer first to be sure that it is ok. If it is Distance Ed or in the evening, obviously there is not a direct conflict.

- DRNA: Degree Requirement, Not in Average means the course will be used as a complementary or technical elective or taken to clear a failure or for an option
- NRNA: Not a Degree Requirement, Not in Average means you are taking the course for interest or to count toward a minor. You can check with the appropriate department (ie ECON) to see if they will accept the course if you wish to count it as an elective as well (in which case it could be coded DRNA)
- TRIA: Term Requirement, In Average means the course is to be applied toward the Accelerated Master’s Program. It will be taken as part of your full term requirements but will not be needed to meet your program requirements (you will have completed these by this point) and as such will be counted in your average.). Note that if you take the grad course as a sixth course then it should be coded NRNA.
A course marked DRNA will count in the cumulative failed count
Note: If your previous term is a failed term you cannot register for courses as per the Examinations and Promotions rule: "a failed term academic decision requiring that the student repeat the most recent term. The student must stay out a minimum of two terms before repeating." You will need to discuss your plans and intentions for your undergrad career with your Undergrad Advisor if you wish to take a course during your work term. Pay attention to the add date for Distance Ed.
